There was a time when I envied people who seemed to have everything already figured out people whose lives looked smooth, predictable, supported. I used to wish that someone had walked ahead of me, clearing the path, showing me how to be, how to move, how to live. But now, standing where I am, I see it differently. I’m grateful it was not handed to me.
If it had been, I might have never learned how to stretch myself beyond what was comfortable. I might have mistaken ease for purpose, or guidance for growth. I might have thought I needed saving, when in truth, I needed shaping.
There’s something powerful about having to build yourself piece by piece without a blueprint, without applause, without anyone to tell you you’re doing it right. Every stumble became a teacher, every silence became an invitation to listen deeper. The hard moments taught me resourcefulness, the lonely ones taught me self-trust, and the unfair ones taught me resilience that can’t be faked.
When life doesn’t hand you the map, you start making your own.
And somewhere in between the confusion and the becoming, you realize that what once felt like lack was actually preparation. The not-having forced me to create. The not-knowing made me curious. The not-being-chosen pushed me to choose myself.
I used to think I was behind.
Now I know I was being built.
Grateful it was not handed to me because I would’ve never learned what my own hands could make.
