Growing up our parents always wanted what was best for us. Not all parents want bragging rights, they just want to be sure we have the foundation needed to always be okay. Growing up my test grades would never be high enough if it wasn’t 100%, even if I had the highest grade in the class. That pushed me to hold myself at a higher position to others, even if it wasn’t true. I didn’t feel like I was better than anyone else I just felt like I had to hold my self to a higher standard. I felt like I wasn’t good enough. So I always strived for higher grades and better outcomes, which caused me to be very tired as I got older. It was always be the best not do your best, which I understand now that I’m older.
But all that holding myself to a higher standard started leaking into my friendships and relationships, and has me wondering am I good enough to have others around me and I’ll just end the relationship without saying anything. Then it turned into everyone should be like me and if they weren’t I gave them no time of day. My high expectations of those around me was causing me to be toxic person.
Having realistic expectations about life and other around us helps us accept whatever life throws at us or least make it more manageable.
